In a self-described “audacious and totally egocentric” letter to SN&R, artist and American River College professor Mick Sheldon requested that a photograph of him be put on the cover of the paper to publicize his show, Cowboy Soliloquy, this month at A Bitchin’ Space, and also to teach his students a lesson on how to self-promote. Well, Mick, nice try, but that first request will not be fulfilled, even if you claim to be “a pretty photogenic guy.” However, Sheldon’s message to his pupils is an important one: All too often, artists neglect to properly inform media outlets and the community about their exhibitions. But if you little budding artists out there want people to see your work, people need to know where and when to see it, no? Don’t be shy to promote, but forget not that rejection is part of the deal (see request denied above).

(Full disclosure: The author once was a student of Sheldon.)
