Happiness is a cheap beer
Local happy hours provide discounted drinks, food and an excuse to drink before 5 p.m.
Somewhere a long time ago, some enterprising bar owner devised “happy hour.” The idea was simple: Lure customers in at certain slow times with reduced drink prices and hope they stick around for the rest of the night, when prices go up.
All around Sacramento, bars subscribe to this ingenious formula. Some places, like Hangar 17, Tokyo Fro’s and Brew It Up!, offer discounted or free food. Others, like Hoppy Brewing Co. and Sudwerk, have drink specials seven days a week, not just during the after-work hours that now symbolize happy hour.
Now, we’re not talking deep discounts here. Unless you drink as much as 10 fraternity brothers combined, you’re not going to finance retirement, get a Ph.D. from Stanford or buy a new SUV with the money you save at happy hour. But, for a nine-to-fiver looking to unwind, or for cash-strapped college students who want to throw back a cheap martini before settling in to write a term paper or watch American Idol, happy hours fill a definite void.
