Hammonton Smartsville Road to Highway 70

rolling hills covered with poppies and buttercups
meadowlark’s singing on the rusted barbed wire
here is where we turn to hike

rows of empty houses, ticky-tac soldiers
four lanes watch for black and whites
drive-in for banana shakes still there

blooming orchards with thigh-high mustard
red-tailed hawks and red-winged blackbirds
on the road, i am thinking of you
