Hall Pass
Two suburban husbands (Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis) get a one-week “vacation from marriage” from their wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) so they can get their randy sex fantasies out of their system, hopefully once and for all. Soon the wives begin straying into vacation land themselves, and nothing turns out quite as expected. The ultimate message is “there’s no place like home,” just like The Wizard of Oz—but trust me, this one ain’t for the kids. Writing-directing brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly (with a writing assist from Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett) are up to their raunchy old tricks, and very near the top of their game. The Farrellys are slapdash moviemakers at best, but when they’re on they’re very funny, and the laugh-to-gags ratio on this one is higher than they’ve gone in years. J.L.
