UC Davis professor Oliver Kreylos works at the W.M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES). The center’s mission is to help understand the Earth through visualization of scientific data. Kreylos’ recent project uses the Xbox Kinect—which is meant for gaming—to create a “holographic” 3-D environment, visualized on a computer screen. After his YouTube video of the project went viral, he was featured in a New York Times article about Kinect hackers. In a free event Monday, December 20, from 7-9 p.m., Kreylos will speak at the Explorit Science Center, 3141 Fifth Street in Davis.
