Back in early January, when SN&R was preparing a Feature Story about Viagra, the cover designers went into overdrive. Never shy about provocative imagery, they created more than a dozen potential cover ideas, each more and more outrageous.

Many were deemed somehow “inappropriate” for publication, which is saying a lot for SN&R. Then, somebody had the brilliant idea to go with a cover that was intentionally phallus-free while posting the rest of the covers online for our readers to enjoy. We also offered the opportunity for readers to vote for a favorite. All of the contenders are still available in our Web archives for the issue of January 12, but here, for the first time, we present the top three alternate “Viagra and the culture of manhood” covers as chosen by our readers.
