Got milk?

The downtown area has been sprucing up its image lately, with fancy restaurants and coffeehouses going in. Those things are welcome in their way, but downtown has plenty of winning aspects that don’t need any urban renewal. High on that list is teeny-tiny Goodie Tuchews, an easy-to-miss little storefront on 10th Street where you will find a plethora of excellent, chewy, fresh cookies. It’s a local treasure that beats the cookie chains to pieces not only on price, but also on quality. The chocolate chip-macadamia is, I think, the best—rich with plenty of chips and the popping crunch of buttery macadamia nuts—but they’re all good (try the peanut butter), and they come with a friendly smile from the owner. The pleasant attitude and the cookies are both a little bit old-fashioned, which is just what a cookie should be. No improvement needed. 1006 10th Street, (916) 444-6048.
