Gourds are not easily defined by appearance. They can be long and snaky, round and bumpy or smooth and asymmetrical. You can find them laying around on the vine, holding water like a canteen or standing in as a percussion instrument at a concert. Gourds have many dimensions. Explore them all at the Zittel Farms Gourd Festival this Saturday and Sunday. Artists and other gourd alchemists will display their gourd bowls, instruments and objets d’art. Live, gourd-related entertainment includes drumming and dancing by Hawaiian and Native American groups. Children are invited to create their own gourd masterpieces. Even if you can’t get excited about gourds themselves, the festival is a chance to enjoy an afternoon on a farm in the crisp autumn air, surrounded by sunflowers, hay bales, Indian corn and friends. The festival lasts from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. Admission is free. Parking is $3. Zittel Farms is located at the corner of Folsom-Auburn Road and Oak Avenue.
