Glory days
Frozen yogurt seems so 1980s. When I was in high school, my friends and I used to go for a giant nonfat frozen yogurt, showered with toppings, every day for lunch. (Back then, we thought anything nonfat was healthy.) There are many high-school trends I’ll never revisit (why, hello, leggings!), but the other day I ambled over to Big Spoon Yogurt and was pleased to find a modern take on the fro-yo craze. It’s got a range of flavors and toppings that puts my old high-school hangout to shame, and the genius touch is this: You serve everything yourself, and then you pay by weight. You can get a little of every flavor or a pound of gummi worms. If you want to fill your Styrofoam cup with hot caramel sauce and sprinkle it with crushed Oreos and garnish it with a tiny soupçon of coffee frozen yogurt on top, like some kind of crazy dessert soup, there’s nobody to judge you. My would-be-iconoclast high-school self would be thrilled. 3644 J Street, (916) 731-4655, www.bigspoonyogurt.com.
