Gift, The

As a small-town woman with magical ESP powers, Cate Blanchett is her usual terrific self in this Southern Gothic thriller from director Sam Raimi. A local girl turns up missing, and when authorities exhaust all avenues, they turn to Blanchett for answers. While some of the dramatic sequences are a bit tiresome, the scary dream sequences should do their part to scare the hell out of you, as will Keanu Reeves in an effective performance as a wife-beating redneck. Also adding excellent work are Hillary Swank (donning a rather unfortunate wig) and Greg Kinnear, an actor who continues to surprise me. Although it’s inconsistent, it does manage some rather large frights.
