Ghost Light Theatre Festival

What did you do on your summer vacation? Some graduate-school candidates who are working on master-of-fine-arts degrees in theater joined with Davis teens and a few adults from the Acme Theatre Company to stage the Ghost Light Theatre Festival in Davis. In the past few years, this summer theater event has become something of a new tradition in a university town that offers few diversions for teens on warm August evenings. The plays they’re staging aren’t “kid stuff.” The first week of August saw productions of Romeo and Juliet (with real teenage actors playing the world’s most famous teenage lovers) and Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan. Both feature sophisticated, humorous language that’s a challenge for actors of any age.

Other productions, which are onstage now through August 28, are titled Sublimus, A Heavenly Blast and Kindred. The latter is a new script that did well at the New Play Festival at the University of California, Los Angeles, where it was directed by Tom Burmester of Davis. It will have a professional production in Southern California sometime within the next year.

Tickets for the Ghost Light’s main productions are $10-$15. Call (530) 297-5632 or visit www.acmetheatre.net for information on performance times and venues.
