Fruity bits

Hearts’ Beat, Upright Brewing Company

Brewed with Chelan cherries harvested from an orchard near its Portland home base, Upright Brewing Co.’s Hearts’ Beat is boldly flavorful. The beer is fermented in oak casks packed with dark cherries—each cask contains more than 100 pounds of the tiny, tart fruit. The result is a brew with a tart bite and only a hint of sweetness—perfect for those who occasionally crave fruitiness—without the cloying taste of a cider. Available locally at Corti Brothers, it’s not cheap ($24 for a pint-plus bottle), but think of it as a welcoming advance on spring. www.uprightbrewing.com.
