Brooke White finished fifth on the seventh season of American Idol and her run was, as the kids say today, kind of a hot mess. The pretty Arizona singer seemed nervous beneath the spotlight’s glare, stopping songs mid-performance, losing confidence as the season dragged on. Still, despite such an awkward stage presence, White managed to exude a cool Carole King authenticity and a defiant refusal to adhere to the show’s attempt to remake her as a candy-coated Top 40 pop tart.
