Fri, Sept 17, Trombone Shorty
Harlow’s, 9 p.m., $20
The classic brass jazz of New Orleans evokes images of gutsy horn players blowing their voices out while striding a rhythm. But Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews’ major-label debut, Backatown, is made of more sophisticated stuff. The 24-year-old player offers rootsy soul, like “Something Beautiful” (with a guest vocal from Lenny Kravitz) alongside funk-rock inspired ragers. It’s a diverse set that indicates Trombone Shorty is not just a revivalist straight outta Treme, but a talent that wants to push N’awlins jazz into the 21st century. And if Backatown sounds too adult contemporary, rest assured that he will blow hotter stuff when he descends on Sacramento. 2708 J Street, www.tromboneshorty.com.
