Fri., Sept. 06, Ian Ethan Case

Shine, 8 p.m., $7

It's not clear what's more entertaining, listening to Ian Ethan Case's dynamic instrumental acoustic songs, or watching him play them. He has a double-neck guitar, and he makes a lot of sounds come out of that thing, all by himself. He does so through implementing slapping, tapping, strumming and sliding techniques—often with each hand doing something different. He creates intricate, precise acoustic symphonies that even a group of four guitarists would struggle to pull off. Lately, he's even added the use of sample and delay pedals, which has really upped the complexity level of his music. He is constantly redefining what a “solo” performance can be. 1400 E Street, www.ianethan.com.
