Fri, June 3, Breathe Owl Breathe
Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, 9:30 p.m., $7
Breathe Owl Breathe reminds me a lot of recently defunct project Port O’Brien, if you take out the gang vocals and sing-along choruses, but leave hauntingly emotional and serene folk rock, not unlike Bon Iver. BOB songs are simple, and Bill Callahan’s crooning, falling somewhere between Jonathan Richman and Django Haskins, adds to their simplistic style. Backing vocals and cello provided by Andréa Moreno-Beals add charming harmonies. Making BOB complete are the percussion techniques and abilities of drummer Trevor Hobbs, along with the use of unusual instruments such as vibraphones and glockenspiels. 129 E Street in Davis, www.breatheowlbreathe.com.
