Fri, June 17, Mickey Avalon
Ace of Spades, 6:30 p.m., $20
How does one describe the entity that is Mickey Avalon? His story reads like a stereotypical rap artist’s back story—drugs, family issues, baby mamas. His lyrics are overtly graphic, but his songs are catchy and funny, and Avalon, born Yeshe Perl, is charismatic. With songs about penis size and those that persuade folks to “do the Jane Fonda,” his catalog feels like a cross between Afroman, Wallpaper and Har Mar Superstar. Back in 2007, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante felt compelled to write a letter scolding audience members who booed Avalon off the stage in Oklahoma City, while praising Avalon. 1417 R Street, www.mickeyavalon.com.
