Fri, June 17, Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison
The Palms Playhouse, 8:30 p.m., $25
If Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are country’s first couple, then consider Kelly Willis (pictured) and Bruce Robison their alt-country counterparts. Robison plays country folk long on balladry, slow realizations and heartache. He’s penned several No. 1 singles for others (“Angry All the Time,” “Travelin’ Soldier,” “Wrapped”) and released eight albums. Willis is the epitome of “lil’ bit country/lil’ bit rock ’n’ roll.” She’s got a sassy alto strut that’s sexily self-possessed with a hint of brooding intensity. Lately she’s leaned toward rockabilly, but she’s proven equally adept at honky-tonk, two-step and wistful old-school country yearning. 13 Main Street in Winters, www.kellywillis.me.
