Fri, July 2, Maren Parusel
Old Ironsides, 9 p.m., $7
San Diego’s Maren Parusel makes music that, on first listen, is gentle and sweet—sugary lo-fi pop for laid-back afternoons. But spend more time with this four-piece, fronted by German singer-songwriter Maren Parusel, and the band’s edge slowly reveals itself via shyly sexy shaker rhythms, slyly aggressive pop melodies and Parusel’s siren song of a voice. Tracks such as “SilverStrand Dancer” and “Dear Love” are perfect summer jams, ripe with irresistible beats and airy, feel-good lyrics that won’t tax your brain too much even as the mercury rises and your critical-thinking skills take a skinny dip into a pool of blissful oblivion. 1901 10th Street, www.theoldironsides.com.
