Fri, July 1, A Thousand Years at Sea
Center for the Arts, 8 p.m., $10-$15
A Thousand Years at Sea sounds like the musical manifest of Moby-Dick, but it’s really singer-songwriters Colin Cotter and Ethan Lewis with pianist Neil Pearlman. They blend Celtic rock, jazz and folk into something sweet and subtle. The New York trio’s debut Silver Shores Await infuses its sparse folk foundation with layers of lively fiddle and dulcet piano. On tracks like “Dances,” the mood is mournful and reflective, while songs such as “Through the Raindrops” exude an animated joyfulness. Pearlman will also perform a set of Scottish-influenced songs from his solo album, Coffee and the Mojo Hat. 314 West Main Street in Grass Valley, www.myspace.com/
