Fri, Aug 19, Aimee Mann
Center for the Arts, 8 p.m., $35-$40
If you’re looking for an example of a journeyman (or woman) musician, look no further than Aimee Mann. With a career spanning from the ’80s to now—from her former band, ’Til Tuesday, to her most recent solo album, @#%&*! Smilers—Mann looked bound to crash for the first two decades of her solo career. Then, her contributions to the Magnolia soundtrack propelled her into a more secure future as a musician. Mann’s perseverance is only outweighed by her soothing, chamber-pop folk style combined with deep and velvety vocals, which blend well with her exemplary songwriting. 314 W. Main Street in Grass Valley, www.aimeemann.com.
