Fri, Aug 12, Eilen Jewell
The Palms Playhouse, 8:30 p.m., $15
Eilen Jewell’s vocals linger like smoke before the footlights, suffused with a sepia-tone languor suggesting late-night barroom dissolution. Her first three albums explored pedal-steel country, western swing and bluegrass. Jewell joined gospel act the Sacred Shakers for their self-titled debut in 2008, and further widened her haunting sound with 2009’s Sea of Tears, finding room for rockabilly, folk, and smoky jazz-blues. After last year’s tribute to Loretta Lynn, Butcher Holler, the prolific singer released Queen of the Minor Key this summer, enriching her collection of country/torch songs with cabaret swing numbers. 13 Main Street in Winters, www.eilenjewell.com.
