It isn't often that a new band pops up and instantly blows my mind. Granted, EV Kain is made up of veteran musicians (members of Hella, Broken Bells, Circus Tents). They sound like they've been a trio for decades, but this San Francisco group has only played a handful of shows. It combines sunny, catchy pop songwriting with complex polyrhythms and guitar trills. It's math rock you'll catch yourself singing in the shower. The whole idea of the band is to just have fun and eliminate the idea of a leader—just let everyone take the lead whenever and however they feel like it. 1901 10th Street, http://evkain.com.
