Fri, April 1, Travie McCoy
Ace of Spades, 6 p.m., $17
A talented artist emblematic of the post-millennial eclecticism of the iPod generation, McCoy mixed punk and rap as a youth, and his band Gym Class Heroes reflect these diverse tastes. Indeed, its breakthrough hit, “Cupid’s Chokehold” was built on a Supertramp (!?!) sample. While GCH blends live instrumentation and pop glyphs with McCoy’s sung raps, McCoy’s 2010 album, Lazarus, leans more toward hip-hop. Written in the wake of his breakup with Katy Perry and rehab from a painkiller addiction, it bristles with melancholy ache and ambition, nowhere more apparent than on his hit “Billionaire,” co-written with man-of-the-moment Bruno Mars. 1417 R Street, www.traviemccoy.com.
