Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune
We meet Frankie and Johnny in bed, where they’re clearly having a good time. But after the climax comes . . . what? That’s the question playwright Terrence McNally explores in this two-character, after-midnight drama, which is an actor’s piece—and quite well performed, in this case. Frankie (Mary Beth Barber) is a waitress, Johnny (Sean Morneau) is a short order cook; they met at work, in a burger joint. They’re both 40-something, and unsatisfied with their lives. One’s looking (desperately) for an instant commitment, the other’s cautious about letting emotional attachment take root in the aftermath of casual sex. Director Ed Claudio, who has a penchant for picking good, meaningful scripts, gives this small production a sense of intimacy—you feel like you really know these people by the end. Presented by Actor’s Theatre of Sacramento at California Stage, 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday; $13-$15. 1721 25th Street; (916) 456-7066; www.actinsac.com.
