Fool’s Gold
A newly divorced couple (Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey) find their romance rekindled when they join forces in search of sunken treasure in the Caribbean. Writers John Claflin, Daniel Zelman and Andy Tennant (who also directs) reunite the stars of 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and manage to give the two of them, against all odds, an even worse script than they had then. Under Tennant’s limp direction, the story pinballs wildly between farce and melodrama, little more than an excuse to strip the stars (and nubile starlet Alexis Dziena) down to skimpy swimwear while giving them little to do (co-stars Donald Sutherland and Ray Winstone get even less). The scenery—both geographic and anatomical—is nice, but otherwise, the movie’s title is only too apt.
