Emma’s Tamales
8101 Elder Creek Rd.Sacramento, CA 95824
Last week I reviewed Mac Que’s Bar-B-Que, where I headed for tri-tip barbecue. Little did I know that I’d also find pretty much the exact opposite of smoked beef: vegetarian tamales. They’re sold at Emma’s Tamales (right next-door to Mac Que’s), which is an outlet for Mother Earth’s Baked Goods. A filling, tasty hot tamale is just about two bucks. There are tofu and chile relleno versions; the signature vegetarian blend; and also a couple of meaty types, with savory pork and green chile chicken. You also can buy them packaged to take home. I liked the spicy salsa that went along with them, which was a nice contrast to the mild corn flavor of the masa. The setting is definitely no-frills, but if you’re in the area and looking for a quick and cheap vegetarian fix, Emma’s will fill you up. 8101 Elder Creek Road, (916) 387-6324.
