It’s July in Sacramento and you need ice. Why not go to the specialists? Crystal Ice has been cooling off Sacramentans since 1910, before most of our forebears had air conditioning. Drive down the bumpy, gravelly street, pull up to the dock and they’ll load whatever you need. Regular party ice comes in seven-, 20- and 40-pound quantities, with the Alhambra premium ice costing a premium. Need to carve a swan for your Fourth of July party? A 300-pound block is yours for $80 plus tax. Want to serve snow cones this weekend? Crystal has got what you need in 10-pound sacks. The icehouse is open daily from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (sometimes open later on weekends) and closed only on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. After all, a Sacramento icehouse doesn’t stay in business for 92 years by taking days off in July. 1800 18th St., 442-7607.
