Eric Clapton
Sessions for Robert J
Some folks collect Eric Clapton CDs just because he’s Clapton, and some folks wait for the “greatest hits” packages; this release is for both camps. Clapton’s never made a secret of the source of his guitar licks in traditional American blues. This tribute to Robert Johnson, a combination CD/DVD compilation, has both traditional and hard-rockin’ covers of the roots master’s best work. Clapton’s so true to the Chicago sound, especially on “Sweet Home Chicago,” it’s almost like listening to Buddy Guy in a smoky club on Rush Street as he cranks it up. “If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day” is a work of wonder—perhaps it will spur listeners to seek out Johnson’s original. With “side men” like the accomplished Billy Preston, this tribute manages to pay homage to both Johnson and Clapton.
