Emergence-See!

Rated 5.0

Daniel Beaty’s Emergence-SEE! imagines what would happen if a ghostly slave ship sailed up to the Statue of Liberty, with the spirit of a 400-year-old African tribal chief at the helm. New York is thrown into a chaos—which Beaty explores through the perspective of over 40 characters, rich and poor, gay and straight, and of many ethnicities. The powerful, high-energy 90-minute piece incorporates slam poetry, singing, dramatic monologues and loopy humor. The versatile Beaty has done this outstanding solo show in Sacramento twice before in small venues. Last year, the show had an extended run at New York’s Public Theater. This year, Beaty won an Obie Award (for outstanding writing/performance Off Broadway) for the piece. Beaty’s writing, acting, singing, and command of humor and pathos are remarkable. This show is really special. Presented by Voices of California for Arts, Culture and Diversity, at the Benvenuti Performing Arts Center, 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 19; $28-$35. 4600 Blackrock Drive; (916) 491-1028; www.benarts.org.
