Prizewinning playwright Luis Alfaro adapts ancient Greek tragedy to gang-infested Los Angeles in a script that mixes Spanish words into English dialogue throughout. While telling this chilling tale of honor, single-minded fury and revenge, Alfaro also affectionately satirizes contemporary California Latino culture and throws in some loopy humor. It’s a heady combination, tautly told by director Susannah Martin, and well-served by a cast led by actress Saffron Henke (as an avenging angel in the title role). This is the kind of gutsy, Latino-based theater we’d like to see more often here in River City.
