Eight Gigs: Wavves
Tue., Aug. 9, 7 p.m., Ace of Spades, $20-$23
Nathan Williams added a “v” to a surf word, slapped reverb on a few bedroom recordings, and became an indie darling in 2008. After that, Wavves became a shitshow of too much too fast, cracking a young man’s head open on stage. Then, it was on to relationships with female indie contemporaries. It got really obnoxious for a minute. Then, he settled into himself, which is reflected on “Pony” from 2015’s V. Now, Wavves channels equal parts arrested development and adult anxiety. “Tarantula” suggests “everything sucks if you don’t get your way,” but “Cry Baby” is a hyperaware self-takedown. 1417 R Street, http://wavves.net.
