Eight gigs: Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
Wed., Jan. 28, 8 p.m., Mondavi Center, $26-$81
The ukulele is usually associated with Hawaii and its legendary performers such as Don Ho. More recently, rockers from George Harrison to Eddie Vedder have also picked up the uke. Now comes the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and its interpretations of pop and rock classics like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Chain,” “Mama Mia,” “Michelle” and “Good Vibrations.” The key here is a nice mix of vocals and those little ukes—plus a lone guitar—which generate a bigger sound than one might expect. Whether drawing from Henry Mancini, Robert Johnson, Nirvana or the Sex Pistols, these 10 musicians clearly have fun with their ukes. 9399 Old Davis Road in Davis, www.ukuleleorchestra.com.
