Eight Gigs: The Darin Caine Hellhound Express
Thurs., July 30, 7 p.m., Shine, $6
Darin Caine's old-school, raspy voice may very well transport you to the Mississippi Delta. Influenced by R.L. Burnside and John Lee Hooker, Caine sounds like he's one with the Delta's poor, vast landscape. You'd never guess singer-songwriter Caine and his band, the Darin Caine Hellhound Express, are based in Utah. Caine, tall and lanky with a long mane, plays the slide guitar—per Delta tradition—alongside Dave Bowen on upright bass and Omar Vargas on drums. On some songs, the Hellhound Express veers toward rock 'n' roll—even still, there's plenty of soul. The Harmonica Ray Band and Michael Ray are also on the bill. 1400 E Street, http://hellhoundexpress.com.
