Eight Gigs: SambaDá
Sat., April 4, 8 p.m., Blue Lamp, $10
SambaDá hails from nearby Santa Cruz, but some of its seven members are Brazil natives. Now, and for the past decade, the band is known for transporting audiences to South America with colorful dance parties. SambaDá mixes reggae, funk, salsa and Afro-Brazilian beats, plus soulful vocals, rich grooves and jazz-inflected horns. But it's not just a concert, it's a stage show with dancing, samba and capoeira—an Afro-Brazilian form of acrobatic martial arts—as well. On this particular evening, SambaDá is celebrating the release of its new album Ritual. It's meant to reflect the band's feelings about creating music, a sacred honor and ritual itself. 1400 Alhambra Boulevard, www.sambada.com.
