Eight Gigs: Portland Cello Project
Thurs., Jan. 22, Harlow’s Restaurant and Nightclub, 8 p.m., $15-$18
The Portland Cello Project operates as a collective of rotating, classically trained cellists, but it plays a wide variety of styles: folk, indie rock, pop, metal, rock, jazz, hip-hop and more (think recording sessions with the Dandy Warhols and Trampled by Turtles, and covers of Taylor Swift and Kanye West). It'll play dirty punk-rock clubs and gorgeous concert halls—as a small four-piece or as full orchestra led by 12 cellists. And don't expect to ever see the same show twice; the project definitely has more than 1,000 songs in its repertoire. The whole point? To bring cello to people who don't ordinarily get to hear it. 2708 J Street, www.portlandcelloproject.com.
