Eight Gigs: Mandela95
Thurs., Feb. 26, 7 p.m., Memorial Auditorium, $30
Nelson Mandela fought for freedom, was imprisoned for more than a quarter century, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and was elected president of South Africa less than a month after voting for the first time. His legacy will be honored in the second annual Mandela95 concert. Dr. Boatamo Mosupyoe, professor of Pan African Studies and department chair of Ethnic Studies at Sacramento State, will provide the keynote address. She met Mandela twice after leaving South Africa during apartheid—the first time shortly after Mandela's prison release and again while he was president. Featured on the bill are the Reggae sounds of Xsample and the Atomic Banned (pictured), plus Rocklin's Jeannette Hawkins. 1515 J Street, www.mandela95concert.com.
