Eight Gigs: La Misa Negra
Fri., Aug. 7, 8:30 p.m., Sol Collective, $10
La Misa Negra promises a spirited, high-energy dance party with a vintage flair. The Oakland nine-piece plays a mix of 1950s and '60s cumbia, porro, gaita and other Afro-Colombian dance music, with a pulsing rhythm section, a horn section and an accordion player unafraid to take the lead. La Misa Negra's live shows have earned the band opportunities that transcend typical genre barriers, opening for the likes of Arcade Fire, Thievery Corporation and SZA. The group's name translates to “Black Ritual” or “Black Mass,” a signal to its musical roots and the greater ritual of dance. In other words, get ready to dance. 2574 21st Street, www.lamisanegra.com.
