Eight Gigs: La Luz
Fri., August 12, 8 p.m., Starlite Lounge, $10
Seattle’s La Luz could be mistaken as doo-wop and surf-rock revivalists. The debut It’s Alive certainly operated in between those parameters. Last year’s Weirdo Shrine eviscerated the context, sounding like femme fatale exotica recorded with the Italian soundtracks of Ennio Morricone on the brain. See also: an alternate soundtrack to It Follows, as Weirdo Shrine is inspired by Charles Burns’ “Black Hole” short story. It felt like Nancy & Lee, except Lee’s now Ty Segall and his presence is only in the production. Don’t mistake La Luz for beach bunnies. There’s a darkness in the grooves, one with bloodied fangs. 1517 21st Street, http://laluzband.tumblr.com.
