Eight Gigs: Kay Marie

Fri., March 27, 9 p.m., Torch Club, $8

Kay Marie has the sass, sex appeal and glamor of the likes of Lorrie Collins, Wanda Jackson, Brenda Lee and Patsy Cline—and the talent to back it up. Marie's vocals and stage presence would have landed her a spot in one of the 1950s or 1960s girl groups. Her rendition of Bill Monroe's “Blue Moon of Kentucky” (also interpreted by Elvis Presley, Ricky Skaggs and Patsy Cline at different times), has a contemporary twist that feels just right. Although influenced by Presley, Cline, Johnny Cash, Fats Domino and the Everly Brothers, Marie also penned originals like “Doghouse Daddy,” “Cry Baby Blues” and “I Won't Be Scared” on her 2014 self-titled album. 904 15th Street, www.kaymariemusic.com.
