Eight Gigs: G. Love and Special Sauce
Fri., Jan. 23, 8 p.m., Ace of Spades, $25
G. Love and Special Sauce has made a livingfor the last two decades blending blues, hip-hop, reggae, funk, pop and a laid-back surfer vibe. Not surprisingly, Garret “G. Love” Dutton's recently released a handful of albums on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records label. In 2011, G. Love switched things up a bit by putting out a more country blues-themed album called Fixin' to Die, produced by the Avett Brothers. He followed that up in 2014 with Sugar, which returns to the old-school G. Love sound: laid back acoustic blues with hip-hop-influenced vocal delivery and wordplay. Singer-songwriter Matt Costa, a fellow Brushfire Records artist, opens this show. 1417 R Street, www.philadelphonic.com.
