Eight Gigs: Free Throw
Sun., Jan 24, 7 p.m., Starlite Lounge, $10
Emo has been creeping back into the national music scene. Fortunately, new bands are influenced more by the underground emo bands of the ’90s like American Football and Cap’n Jazz rather than whatever was happening the decade after. Free Throw hails from Nashville and brings an extreme range of dynamics. More importantly, it brings a loose, down-home groove that is refreshing and highlights the profound vulnerability of the band and its tortured, beautiful vocals. There are elements of ’90s punk and alternative rock in there too, particularly a subtle overtone of early Weezer. 1517 21st Street, www.freethrowband.com.
