Eight Gigs: Byron Colborn Group
Sat., May 2, 9:30 p.m., Kupros Craft House, no cover
If you're a frequenter of Sacramento's live jazz scene, you have definitely spotted Byron Colborn. The baritone saxophone player lends his chops to the Kyle Rowland Blues Band, the Harley White Jr. Orchestra and the Peter Petty Band. He used to collaborate with Anthony Coleman II—before Coleman moved to New York—and helped form their short-lived but lively Afro-beat ensemble Sankofa. But even more likely, you've seen Colborn marching the streets as the bandleader of the Element Brass Band, the New Orleans second-line style group that took home this year's jazz Sammie. How does Colborn perform on his own terms? I don't actually know, but you should find out. 1217 21st Street, www.facebook.com/byroncolbornmusic.
