Eight Gigs: Blaqk Audio
Sat., May 7, 8 p.m., Ace of Spades, $17-$20
Blaqk Audio’s third studio album, Material, released on April 15, is notable as the dark-wave duo’s most lyrically grim work to date. What began almost 10 years ago as an electronic side project between Davey Havok and Jade Puget of the post-punk band AFI soon grew into an internationally worshiped duo with a devoted, cult-like online following. Blaqk Audio’s debut album, CexCells, with its more synth-pop vibe, is reminiscent of groups like Depeche Mode or Soft Cell. Yet Material blends darker and more melancholy lyrics courtesy of Havok layered with Puget’s sorrow-driven soundscapes on keyboard and synthesizer. 1417 R Street, www.blaqkaudio.com.
