Eight Gigs: Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame
Fri., Dec. 30, 9 p.m., Torch Club, $8
At age 19, Earl Matthews caught a set by legendary bluesman Tommy Castro, and the seed was planted—from that point forward, dude knew he wanted to sing the blues. Fast-forward a couple of years, and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame formed in Modesto. Presently, the band is comprised of Eli Lester and Jason Finley on guitar; Randall Nieman on bass; and Ian Stambaugh on drums. Influenced largely the Chicago blues scene of the ’50s, Big Earl and fam kicks it old school with tunes that cut straight to the chase. 904 15th Street, www.facebook.com/BigEarlandtheCryinShame.
