Nickelodeon’s Nick Cannon stars as cocky Harlem drummer and high school graduate Devon, who is recruited by an Atlanta university to play in its elite marching band under a full scholarship. Devon wants to step into the limelight immediately as the band heads for its yearly competition with a rival university, but he soon learns that it takes more than musical talent to be a team player. Director Charles Stone III tackles themes of manhood, ego, hardheaded ambition and romance as if he were making a too-familiar coming-of-age sports story, but he musters enough energy and character development to stretch Hollywood’s formula. The movie features Zoe Saldana as a head cheerleader with brains and Orlando Jones as the bandleader who subjects his students to bootcamp-like training and disciplines.
