Drop it like it’s hot
So you’ve taught yourself how to Dougie, and now you want to take the next step: learning how to all-out break-dance. Well, you’re in luck. This Saturday, local urban arts studio and event production company Capitol Roots will hold a charity break-dancing event called The 5ive. It’s a joint workshop that will take place simultaneously in five cities throughout California. Each of the five locations will celebrate one of Capitol Roots’ five P’s: purpose (Sacramento), passion (San Francisco), people (Newark), potential (Antioch) and power (Alhambra).
The event evolved from a similar series of workshops called The Opportunity. Starting in 2009, The Opportunity took place 11 times before it ran its course and eventually turned into The 5ive. Sacramento’s 5ive workshop will happen at Spotlight Dance & Fitness in West Sacramento, and will feature members of the Funkanometry, 2nd Nature and Capitol Roots break troupes. Choreographers in other cities include members of Kaba Modern, the Sacramento Kings Breakers and even Justin Bieber’s dance crew. Throughout California, there will be a total of 43 choreographers collaborating to teach you how to drop, pop and rock your body all over the dance floor. Portions of the proceeds will go to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and also toward supporting other future break-dancing events. Just make sure not to try a flare or headspin unless you’re a veteran breaker.
