Don’t be a chicken, or a duck

Remember roller-skating birthday parties at the roller rink, cruising to the tunes of “YMCA” and that song “I don’t want to be a chicken / I don’t want to be a duck?” Well, that’s nothing like roller derby. If a roller-rink birthday party is like the Sesame Street of skating, then a Sac City Rollers derby is like Kill Bill—well, without any killing. But there are killer blowouts as blockers try to ensure their jammer gets around the track—sometimes even becoming a slingshot to get her around members of the opposing team. The Sac City Rollers will start their 2009 season with an intraleague battle: Rude Girls vs. Sweaty Betties. There will be a beer garden, raffle prizes, performance by Revolution Twirl Club, plus plenty of fishnet stockings, crazy makeup and insane antics. It’s good, wholesome family fun.
