Deep in the heart
A Texas Romance
It’s 1928 in a small town in east Texas. The widow Wilson, living with her sister and brother-in-law in their family home, steps out onto the porch to find a young man, a number of years younger than herself, standing on her doorstep. The young man has come to ask permission to call on her and, much to her older sister’s dismay, the widow accepts.
What ensues is a roller coaster of inquisition, courtship, anger, fear, frustration, tenderness, understanding, strength and affection … everything that leads up to and forms the bonds of true love.
A romance in the truest sense of the word, the Delta King Theatre’s newest production, A Texas Romance, written by Ellsworth Schave, is a sweet tribute to the struggle of blossoming new love.
Directed by Miranda McClenaghan, A Texas Romance could easily come off as just another stuffy high school-level play. Stephanie Gularte (Bite Me Cleopatra, Oleanna)—arguably one of the strongest young actresses in Sacramento theater—along with cast members Teresa Vuinovic (Romeo and Juliet, Gunfighter) and Sean Manwaring, a longtime musical-theater performer, breathe a fury of life into the production, making it a delight for audiences who want an evening of romantic entertainment.
A beautiful set design amid the old-time splendor of the Delta King makes for an enchanted evening for anyone who believes in the miracle of love.
