Death by Chocolate
Death by Chocolate grows on you. Once you understand where the band is coming from, it’s as refreshing as the breeze off the white cliffs of Dover. DbC, led by 19-year-old hotel chambermaid Angela Faye Tillett, whose endearing childlike English accent is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, just released a second CD, Zap the World, a contemporary throwback to the swinging ’60s. The band exactly reproduces an ad for Vox wah-wah pedals, originally done by the Electric Prunes, and adds voiceovers of Tillett’s favorite car, art, grocery list for a birthday party, favorite cereal and favorite article of clothing. Careful covers of “While I’m Still Young,” from the film Smashing Time, Dudley Moore’s “Cutoutgirlscout” and the title cut, “Zap the World” which was Witchiepoo’s theme song from Krofft Bros.’ kid show H.R. Pufnstuf keep in the theme of a time when London was swinging and LSD was legal.
